previz // motion // 3d: me commissioned by Intel and created at McCann Erickson film production: Fifty Films the following is a postmortem for the intel IT center so i was presented with an opportunity to work on an intel project. i felt really comfortable with the concept presented by the creative director and knew that it was something that i would be able to crank out. it also touched on a few things that i knew how to do but hadn't ever had the opportunity to ever implement with clients up to that point. the creative director approached me with the script which had been approved by legal. the project was pitched to me as being around 30 to 45 seconds long. cool. i got this. these are some of the storyboards that i received... in short: dude is in a white room interacting with through the VO i knew immediately that we had a huge problem. the project was pitched AND budgeted at 30 - 45 seconds. i timed myself reading the script at around 150 words per minute - it timed around 2:00. this was not a project that i would be able to make in the established timeline. i talked with the creative director and suggested some possible reworks to cut out some potentially repetitive VO. no deal. the VO had gone through legal and it was too late. i had agreed to take on something that i knew would kill me. i felt a little misled but a commitment is a commitment - besides, i'm a pro and i get work done. i knew that we were going to need to do A TON of planning before we got into the studio to film on green screen. we'd need to figure out every single camera move before hand. the harder part, however, was to figure out where the talent would be pointing and manipulating the UI. we'd need to position the talent in a way that allow us to view the panel in it's near entirety while maintaining continuity throughout. we knew right off the bat that we didn't want dude standing in the same spot the entire time with his back facing us. i hashed out some doodles of more precise compositions of the talent interacting with the UI panels. i really really wanted to do some super sexy camera moves with some 3d motion tracking but because of our timeline wasn't something that there was time to do. if the project had been 30 seconds ish we would have totally been able to do it but you know how it goes sometimes. <img be floating in - get the timing pinned down (see where the were long paragraphs of VO without stimulating visuals) - this to me was THE MOST IMPORTANT step in the entire process. people kept mentioning it was cute and i was like NOOOOOOO it's not cute - it's the blood, guts, and bones of our entire project. in the meantime of making the animatic - the art director was busting out these notes on some print outs i had made of all the UI's. i carried the stupid things around with me everywhere i went. i'd take them with me to lunch, i'd take them to bed with me in case i got an genius running some tests in maya if the dang thing would work without any major hiccups. matching camera lenses with the one's we'd be filming with and some other nerdy stuff. we needed to see how big we could make the UI panels as well without making it look silly or too crowded. why wouldn't we just build the entire thing in After Effects? cause check out the sicky dope images below. are you serious? look at those awesome reflections and transparency. it was going to look SO RAD. i was in love with the fact that i'd be able to build this light kit that would reflect in the UI panels and how the class edges of the panels were interacting with the reflections of the talent. that would be impossible to do in AE in our timeline, and i doubt it would turn out as nicely as it did in maya. interact with a UI that he wouldn't be able to see while we were filming. came up with the solution to overlay these images on the monitors and have the talent either tap or swipe at the designated areas and whatnot. this was the next most important step BECAUSE we had to start animating the UI's before we even filmed the actor due to the time constraints. so if our actor pointed to the left and swiped INSTEAD of pointing to the left and tapping, we'd be in big trouble. there was a tiny battle between the team about how much the talent should be interacting with the UI. i was on team 'less is more' because it would give us more time to transition between the different UI screens and give the viewer more time to absorb what they were looking at before the entire screen changed again. i think the compromises that we all made really made for some solid timing. some good quick successive motions as well as some nice slow interactions. <img client. we didn't key the footage yet, because we didn't have time to waste on it if the client didn't like the cut, so we waited to hear back from them before we started keying. and by we, i mean them. i didn't want to key out 4k footage nor did i really have much time for tinkering it so we passed it off. thanks gents. this is the keyed footage we got back. the color correction on the dude looked not great considering we shot on the RED. i suspect their white balance was off. i wasn't super psyched about that AND I WAS EXPLICIT THAT WE NEEDED TO FILM WITH A QUICK SHUTTER SPEED to avoid too much motion blur on our talent but the director and i had different ideas. he wasn't the one trying to key out blurry arms or like in the last frame - blurry guy taking three steps to the left.
